Is an irregular and eccentrically placed accumulation of fatty material in the walls of the coronary arteries. Within the plaque there are inflammatory cells and it is covered by a thin fibrous sheet.
The plaque can rupture and form a blood clot
(thrombus), leading to either a myocardial infarction or unstable angina pectoris (see figure 70).
